Spurwing Island Lodge on Lake Kariba in Zimbabwe is the perfect place if you want a holiday of family, rest and relaxation. However, serious game viewers and fishermen visiting the Kariba area in Zimbabwe also enjoy staying at the Spurwing Island Lodge .

At Spurwing Island, guests are offered a variety of accommodation, all overlooking Lake Kariba and the nearby Matusadona National Park. A maximum of 40 adults can be accommodated, however, if you want to bring along more friends and family to Spurwing Island, it can be arranged.

There are 11 tents, all with two zip entrances. The one entrance leads onto a small veranda, where you can simply sit and gaze at the beautiful surroundings. The other zip entrance leads to an en-suite bathroom. All tents at Spurwing Island are equipped with twin beds, a dressing table, fan, mosquito nets and 220V AC plug sockets. Two of the tents can be changed into a double tent to accommodate a family.

Spurwing Island also offers six stone cabins, with thatched roof and veranda. All are en-suite, and equipped with twin beds, cupboards, dressing table, fan, mosquito nets and 220V AC plug socket. Extra beds can be provided for children.

Three chalets provide further accommodation at Spurwing Island. All are stone under thatch, en-suite with separate shower and equipped with twin beds, cupboards, dressing table, ceiling fan, mosquito nets and 220V AC plug sockets. The chalets have French doors onto the veranda.

Spurwing Island forms part of the Matusadona National Park and therefore offers many excellent opportunities to view game such as cheetah, lion, leopard, elephant, hippo, buffalo, crocs, many antelope and more than 400 bird species. Visitors to Spurwing Island can do game viewing in the Matusadona National Park by guided boat, safari vehicle or walking expeditions. A speed boat safari to the Sanyati Gorge will allow you to see the Matusadona Mountains from another very dramatic angle.

Fishing is one of the main activities at Spurwing Island and you can hire tackle from the Lodge. An experienced coxswain will help you to find the perfect spot to land that bream or tiger fish. The Spurwing Island Lodge’s chefs will prepare your catch, or if you want to show off your catch at home, you can freeze the fish.

Spurwing Island offers a swimming pool, curio shop, tennis court, TV on the central terrace, pool table, playground, dart board, laundry service and bar. Security is provided by means of an electric fence.  



Most people visiting Spurwing island will spend a night or two in Kariba. If you are looking for hotel with breathtaking views, but which is affordable, look no further than Cutty Sark Hotel. This hotel is affordable and their accommodation of a reasonable standard.

In contrast with Kariba, which is known for its heat during summer, the Eastern Highlands are always cool. The Troutbeck Inn Hoteland Resort near Nyanga is a family destination and known for the fact that its fire place is always burning. Even during mid summer.

The drive from Spurwing Island to Zimbabwe's second city, Bulawayo, will take you about 9 hours. The Churchill Hotel is not too far from Bulawayo's CBD and on route to the Matopo National Park.


Spurwing is certainly the highlight of any visit to Zimabwe and we therefore introduce you to lodges in South Africa which are of equally high standard. Amazian Mountain River Lodge in Kwazulu Natal, Drakensberg Mountains is such a destination and a very romantic place. No children are allowed, the food is excellent and each room is equipped with a spa bath.

Near Upington in the Northern Cape province is Spitskop Nature Reserve. The Kalahari Monate Lodge on the reserve offers self-catering (self contained) accommodation on route to the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park.

The Eastern Cape is a paradise for anybody in need of a holiday. The Ntaba River Lodge in Port St Johns is on the banks of the river.It is a family destination while the The Regent in East London is a luxury hotel near the beach.  Both of these properties are highly recommended.


The Caprivi in Namiba is a very popular destination for guests of Spurwing Island. You can reach Katima Mulilo in the Caprivi within a day from Kariba. You can book all your lodges and hotels at Caprivi Accommodation such as Mazambala Island Lodge which is on an island in the Kwando River or the famous Ngepi camp on the banks of the Kavango or Okavango River. your next stop after the Caprivi will most likely be Namutoni i in the Etosha national park and three days drive from Island Safari Lodge.

Keetmanshoop is the main town in the southern distict of Namibia. Just outside this town is the Quivertree Forest with its facinating plant life and rock formations. The Quivertree Forest Rest Camp is the ideal place to overnight while you explore this wonderland.


Spurwing Island is an eco tourism destination and we are therefore proudly associated with other similar ventures. Khama Rhino Sanctuary near Serowe is such a project.  They offers good self-catering (self contained) accommodation while contributing enormously to the conservation of rhinos. If you drive from Spurwing to Khama Rhino Sanctuary you would need a place to overnight. Thapama Hotel in Francistown is the most luxurious hotel in the town while their rates are quite reasonable.
